Sometimes, positivity hits the mark, sometimes it is very mistimed. In the case of this watch, it is the latter. Let’s take a look.
A yellow circle, two black dots, and a little upturned line – the smiley serves as the universal embodiment of positivity, joy, and sharing. A symbol that has played a major role at the heart of pop culture across generations, the smiley finally has its pride of place in a watch! We’ve always thought smileys belong everywhere, but we’ve also found the one place they absolutely don’t – in watches. The concept seems to be very positivity-riddled, but not something well-thought out. This emotion-driven watch did not hit the mark and we’re glad to tell you why.
RM 88 Automatic Winding Tourbillon Smiley from Richard Mille
This time, our eye is on the RM 88 Automatic Winding Tourbillon Smiley from Richard Mille. The watch features a skeletonised automatic winding tourbillon movement with an hours, minutes, and function indicator. It also comes in a limited edition of 50 pieces. The highlight of the watch is the smiley that has been placed upon it. And although some like it, most don’t. And we don’t either.
The elements and the design of the watch make it seem like something kids would like, but given that it is a luxury watch, no one would actually give it to their kids. And let’s face it, the watch is not at all aesthetically pleasing. And neither is it something any adult would actually be caught dead wearing. It is highly unpleasing aesthetically and that aspect was not well-thought out at all.
There is no use for a well-made timepiece if it just looks ridiculous on one’s wrist.
Richard Mille watches are highly endorsed by rappers and athletes. But it is clear every time that it is just a marketing strategy and nothing else. And at this point, Richard Mille watches have just become a marketing scheme and mere flex pieces. The watch quality is great, no doubt. But the actual timepiece is not. And there is no use for a well-made timepiece if it just looks ridiculous on one’s wrist. We agree, Richard Mille’s watches are not everyone’s cup of tea. But maybe that is actually a blessing in disguise. When a watch looks this ridiculous, who would want to purchase it? Imagine yourself wearing this to a gala or an important dinner with your tuxedo on. Heard everyone’s laughter in your mind? We did too. So, if this does not convince you, well, you can just go ahead and get the watch. But don’t be surprised if you never want to wear it.
