Celebrity hairstylist Henry De La Paz is a diva magnet who magically reveals a new you with his ingenious snips. That’s why the rich and the famous trust him each time, with creating a splash.

When you are born in a home, where you are surrounded by women, in a small town—San Antonio, Texas, USA—you are bound to understand their needs, quite swiftly. That’s just what happened with New York-based Paz, who, from a loft salon in his hometown, went on to work with the biggest names in Hollywood and high society—from Formula One racing honcho Bernie’s daughter Tamara Ecc el stone to sparklers like Elizabeth Banks and Zooey Deschanel.

“When I was young, I liked giving fringes to everything, from hair to cushions,” laughs Henry, who after studying at Tony&Guy, aspired to become a designer. He did a clothes line for a year and realised it was snippin’ that he enjoyed the most. “I worked at Elizabeth Arden, Saks Fifth Avenue, where, for a year, I got no clients, so I decided to do the hair of the girls working on makeup and perfume counters and then, as they proverbially say, there was no looking back!” says Henry, who is in India to set up the Warren Tricomi salons in India.

He further elaborates, “I opened my own salon in 2005, where I got a contingent of basketball wives, who had lots of money to spare, taking my business from nothing to me burning out and wanting to move out in 2008.”

This was a game changer, as Henry came to the dream city of Los Angeles, selling off his salon, and buying a new car, settling into a new rhythm of life. But as luck would have it, the movie he was slated to do, got cancelled. Providence gave him another chance, he styled his first ever film Five Hundred Days of Summer with New Girl actress Zooey Deschanel. “She was great fun to work with and had no hang ups—a cool chic, who also played in a band, She & Him,” he tells us. But LA was getting too much for Henry. He wanted a bit more from life, so he moved to New York, where he preferred the subway over the LA metro, and felt more at home. He got his big break when he styled Twilight star Kristen Stewart, whom he changed from a young, rock ’n’ roll girl who sported curls to a diva who loved her sexy updo. Then came Elizabeth Banks, of Hunger Games fame (she played Effie Trinket), who wanted Hollywood esque glamour, but with a twist—she wanted glamorous long hair. “So I made her happy,” smiles Henry. What really got him in the big league was Tamara Ecclestone, who also has her own range of beauty products, called Beauty Show—a premium range, sold exclusively at Selfridges, Harvey Nichols and Harrods, with a starting price of 30 pounds. “I was to go to the Art Bazel, a fair in Miami, when she requested I do her hair for a week. So I cancelled my trip, but that ensured a lasting friendship,” Henry tells us. “She was pregnant when I met her, now she has had her baby and we are still in touch.” Interestingly, Henry is a man who knows what women want, that’s why he will tell you that most women get it wrong, despite knowing what they want. They shampoo their hair when actually they should scrub their scalp, that’s where the oil build-up occurs. “I also tell them that there is nothing better than coconut oil. If I could be its brand ambassador, I would become one immediately. It has natural Keratin, it is a frizz controller as it helps you get rid of dry ends and provides good protein to your tresses,” he explains.

Happy to be in a country he always aspired to visit,Henry hopes that women in India will one day abandon their obsession with long hair and maybe try layers or a bob. Taking risks does work, he insists. He talks of Edward Tricomi. Tricomi took a risk by starting a revolution in hair, turning the usual regimen of hair-cutting on its head—he would wash and condition and thencut, rather than what was done traditionally. “He teamed up with colourist Joel Warren, to change the way women viewed a haircut, it was a small move, but it worked,” he concludes. 5timeless - ly luxurious looksforyou Henry dishes out 5 ways to make you look eternally glamourous. 1. Slick, clean ponytail/bun: A low ponytail is Hollywood’s new obsession, so all you need is a flat iron and two bobby pins (which should never show). This pony can then be swept away into a bun, and I tell women to choose clean over a romantic look.

2. Red lipstick always works, but the key is finding the right shade that accentuates your skin colour. It always reminds me of Rita Hayworth and Marlene Dietrich, two women who really worked this in their favour.

3. Blow out, for bouncy hair and also movement. Don’t curl hair on your iron.

4. Height is the new high, as women like Jennifer Lopez are bringing back the bouffant in a big way. 5. Hair accessories are getting cutting-edge. I used a broken belt buckle as a hairband; a necklace as a blingy element on a bun, brooch on the side of the head to add restrained glamour. There is a lot you can do with things that one usually discards.
