Prada's new Buckle Bag tries to blur the distinction between fun design and practically chic. With its flashy belt buckle and high-end finish, it's undeniably noticeable, but is that enough?
The Prada Buckle Bag makes a statement, but is it the one deemed ‘easy to integrate’ into daily life? The chunky, rectangular shape and two top handles render it structured but fashion-forward. The highlight is the detachable belt detail running along the front of the bag, a whimsical touch to the overall look. There is a sense of luxury oozing with its 22-karat gold leaf-embossed logo, rendering the bag an elegant finish.
Inside, it is cleverly designed with two spacious compartments, a middle pocket, an inside D-ring clip, and smooth nappa leather lining that will keep your belongings sorted. The strap is removable and adjustable, like the shoulder strap, ensuring easy carrying of your style, be it shoulder or crossbody. There are colour choices from traditional black and caramel, along with deeper shades such as cocoa brown, cordovan, and clay grey. Italian-made, the bag comes across as an homage to contemporary craftsmanship and classic elegance.
However, the implementation fails to match up to the concept. Although we like the concept and appreciate the idea of using the belt as a playful threat among friends, the design itself falls short. The buckle is clunky and too masculine, tipping toward a literal interpretation that is more like a pant than refined. It seems to be borrowing from the Celine whisker belt bag or the presently ubiquitous "belt bag" fanny pack trend, even taking a nod at the comeback of the denim bag, but not quite looking really well-thought-out or executed. Sometimes it's as if Prada is thinking, "Here's an emergency belt, just in case," which makes the whole idea feel tongue-in-cheek, although not necessarily so in a too-cheery or desired way. For a bag that's really supposed to have both function and form, this one feels like it’s stuck in the middle.
As if Prada is saying, "Here's an emergency belt, just in case."
The Prada Buckle Bag attempts to be bold and inventive, but the concept isn't new, and, for real, others have done a better job at it. The belt around the bag is less a thoughtful piece of design than an unintentional echo. Burberry did it a while back in a similar way, and they did it in much neater fashion. Even Celine's Conti Bag, which this appears to have borrowed from, had a cleaner and refined approach to the belt detail. Prada’s version doesn’t really bring anything fresh to the table. It feels like a recycled idea that lacks originality and purpose, without the refinement or craftsmanship we’ve seen from other brands.
