“I always draw inspiration from my dad and my brother as they are very involved in the community and produce manufactory.”
Welcome to L’Officiel, the first thing we’d like to know is why did you enter the fashion industry?
My dad was a tailor, and I always wanted to follow my family’s first step. Becoming a designer was a natural move for me.
What does fashion mean to you, and who was your inspiration when you started your own label?
Fashion means everything to me. Even some people joke about it by saying it is only fashion, and you are not saving anyone’s life, but to me, fashion did save my life by transforming such a beautiful life now. I always draw inspiration from my dad and my brother as they are very involved in the community and produce manufactory.
What’s the best thing about being a fashion designer?
The best thing about being a fashion designer is you are able to wear your own clothes. You can also help other people to feel good about themselves and change their moods.
“The next collaboration will be launched in September with a company called Fabrique.”
We’re discussing you from abode to atelier, give us an insight into your life from home to the studio?
I live near my office, and I love the fact that I can take a walk to my favorite café and take my son from home to the studio.
Name some of your collaborations that you really liked and did well? Are there any more collaborations coming up this year?
My favorite collaborations have been designing for the New York City Ballet and collaborations with Santiago Calatrava. As Santiago Calatrava is my favorite architect, and it was my honor to collaborate with him. Recently, I just dropped off a new collaboration with NuCycl to design a collection of T-shirts. I am so excited because NuCycl creates new fibers from textiles that were diverted from landfills. I think this is the direction that everyone should be moving forward. The next collaboration will be launched in September with a company called Fabrique.
There’s so much pressure for designers to come out with their greatest collection season after season. What advice would you give to young designers just starting out and hoping to make it in the industry?
My best advice is to understand this is a life career, and it is not based on one season. Therefore, have fun and learn from every season. Thinking about this season, you are working is not the last season, and we are progressing with each season. The fashion industry changes, so you also need to change with the fashion industry.
“I am very excited that we are going to launch an eyewear collection that will complement my new collection.”
You also worked hard to launch the Carlos Campos School for Fashion & Design, tell us something about that?
At a personal level, this has become one of my biggest achievements as I came from a place where many young kids have wanted to become fashion designers. Being able to provide that for them it’s a great feeling.
Spill some deets about your upcoming collections and what should the fans expect?
I am very excited that we are going to launch an eyewear collection that will complement my new collection. The collection should be launched by this month.
What is happening next in your life, both personally & professionally?
Personal, we are raising a three-year-old boy, and we have so much fun dressing him up, so that is keeping me busy professionally and personally.
One piece of advice for our lovely readers?
Be yourself but also need to look out for what other people are doing great. Take as much good advice as possible.
