  • Scholarly Landscape

Nicolas Poussin is a name known widely in terms of landscape paintings. His canvas depicted the fundamentals of the relation between nature and man. He is also noted to be the founder of the ideal landscape. Man is seen to be majestic and grandiose in his paintings. He offers an in-depth reflection of his origin and his path.

His work, the cycle of 4 seasons, produced between 1660 and 1664, presents various sketches that represent the Old Testament, where landscape take a dominant place. In Spring or Earthly Paradise, one can spot Adam and eve in front of the famous apple tree as described in Genesis, while the picture of God at the top right portrays him flying from the scene to prepare their punishment. Such heavenly sketches gave him the respect he deserved.

  • Spiritual Landscape

Is it dawn or is it dusk? The white mist enveloping the sky seems to be denoting both and neither at the same time while the presence of a Capuchin monk on the seaside gives no particular answer. The immensity of the surrounding landscape seems to be portraying much more than simple answers.

Casper David Friedrich, termed to be one of a German Romanticism painters by inspired by philosophy and allegory which was also quite evident in this art work. His painting Monk by the sea, made in 1808-10, sends a message that man may not be much in the face of this unpredictable and sometimes cruel nature. Thus, the presence of the monk does not make a difference while still presents a reflection of the entire mankind.

  • Tormented Landscape

Vincent Van Gogh is a well known name in the world of art and The Starry Night is possibly the most celebrated work by the artist. Although the painting seems to be an ordinary depiction of a scene, it was later found that the village painted is actually fictious. The landscape illustrated in this painting can be quite quant with hellish spirals, contrasting colours as well as sharp features.

The moon, which appears to be a bright light in the sky, doesn’t do anything to illuminate the village that lies underneath. An ominous touch is added by the thick black branches of the cypress. The spiral movement of brush strokes denotes the different shades of blue as observed in the vicinity of numerous stars, capturing everyone’s attention. Perhaps his work was a product of his lifelong psychological torment which saw no true euphoria until his death. However, Vincents paintings are also read as transcripts of modern landscapes, giving a rough idea of the new age.
