Small bathrooms big illusions

We all desire a plush and exquisitely rejuvenating bath like Egyptian Queen Cleopatra. While the queen’s palatial bath must have taken in huge deluxe lodgings, most of us do not possess that. However, simple ways we can make our modest small bathrooms appear more spacious.

From using mirrors to swearing by minimalist designs, here’s how to make your bathroom look bigger.

Play with mirrors and patterns

As much as they are needed for the closet or dressing rooms, mirrors are a must-have to create an illusion of larger spaces. “Wall to Wall mirrors magnify a small space and are the most ideal especially for powder rooms”, said interior designer and blogger Lakshmi Nagarajan. She told that larger tiles in lighter colours and geometric patterns will work best for small bathrooms.

Opt minimalism

Loud interiors like high contrasting colour schemes, too many tiles on flooring and many elements add to visual noise. Tone it down! Muted colour palettes overlayed across walls, floors and crown mouldings alludes to more space. For decluttering, clear the space to make it look less cramped. Create organized compartments that are separate from one another. For instance, a glass door to separate shower area with the vanity, toilet and washbasin will bring in order. To achieve minimalism with a flair of ritz, Nagarajan suggests, “Use bare essentials like one plant that survives in low light. But invest in classy accessories for the soap dish, soap dispenser, towel basket. A cheeky framed poster can add an element of humour.”

Bright Light and Clean

You don’t want to sully your hands with cleaning up a dirty, gloomy and wet bathroom. Light is a perfect repellant to dingy and damp bathrooms that creates a crummy bathing experience. So make sure there is a window in the bathroom to let sunlight enter and dry the mess. One can opt for frosty privacy glass from acid etched to sandblasted designs depending on how much translucent they want the glass to be. Compliment the spacing with small foliage plants and clear lightweight curtains. “If there is no source of natural light, one can use hanging lights or a mirror light coupled with ones on the ceiling. They can fill the void of a natural light source. Warm lights are a good choice”, Nagarajan added.

While these are basics for a spacious bathroom look, there are some trends of 2020 that were in high demand and can make our bathrooms look gorgeous. “From gold or brass fittings to having plants in the bathroom and printed curtains, all were in fashion this year. But if you are going for a classy look, printed curtains may not be the right choice. Exposed pipes done right in the metal may look good in a small space.”
