Luxe Obsessions

I love fancy luxury cars. I bought my dad the Mercedes SUV on his last birthday. He loved it!
My style obsessions are a super mix of funky and practical. For instance, my everyday sunglasses are currently these purple-coloured, super-fun Victoria Beckham Aviators. But my daily bag, right now, is a black leather backpack. I have been carrying it around everywhere because it fits my entire world. Once I stuff my things in, I don’t like to transfer things around every day, so I continue to use a bag for a while.

I mostly wear Indian designers for the red carpet but, currently, I am flipping on Elie Saab. I also like DVF, Alexander McQueen and Zuhair Murad. Basically anything that’s pretty but edgy is my now thing. I also like outfits by Shantanu & Nikhil and Shehla Khan.
I don’t wear a lot of jewellery, but I like unique, out-of-the-ordinary pieces. My recent splurge purchase were a pair of beautiful diamond and gold earrings, which my mother freaked out on, too. It is a very contemporary piece, not the usual run-of-the-mill kind. But for watches, I like classic pieces that go with everything I wear. I do have a few precious pieces I have collected from various brands. However, my favourite watch brand is Rolex. She has even sung a song for her to-be-released film Tevar, featuring internationally-acclaimed Punjabi singer Imran Khan of Amplifier fame, who is also making his Bollywood debut with this song. Ask her about singing with Imran and she says, “Imran was adamant about wanting me to sing for this song,” Sonakshi explains. “He said, ‘I don’t want anybody else crooning for you.’ I told him I can’t sing professionally; I am a bathroom singer. And yet, there I was, standing in the recording studio because he wouldn’t have it any other way. He came into the recording booth with me and we sang together. And while I was singing he would shut up and the technicians would record it quickly.” Rehearsals didn’t even figure in the scheme of the things. “They took me and threw me at the deep end of the pool and said, ‘Now sing’.” Sonakshi admits, this is something she always wanted to do but never had the training nor the confidence to. “He got the best out of me,” she says. “Now I can say that I would definitely like to sing some more.” Sonakshi also co-owns Birmingham-based United Singhs—one of 21 international teams in the World Kabaddi League. I ask her how investing in that came about. “It was very out of the ordinary for me as well,” confesses Sonakshi. “It was a good opportunity to make an effort for a sport other than cricket. Study this—the World Kabaddi League started with 10 countries and it has already gone up to 21 countries in a very short span of time. That’s how much potential it has. So it seemed like a good idea to get attached to it and help it grow into a world phenomenon.”
Interestingly, Akshay Kumar and Honey Singh’s teams are pitted against Sonakshi’s. The minute I mention that, Sonakshi says, laughing,“Iguessthat’st he only place that we will be battling it out. The inside joke is that whenever our teams are clashing, we will support the other team, to not have any bad blood.”
Next,I ask her about the IceBucketChallenge.Celebrities across the world have taken up the challenge, posting their videos on social networking platforms to create awareness about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurological disease. The idea is that whosoever gets nominated to take the challenge, dumps a bucket full of ice water on their head or donates 100 dollars to the cause. But Sonakshi took the challenge without getting nominated and also tweaked it smartly. She overturned a bucket with only one ice cube on her head, sending out the message to save water, and received a lot of praise for the same. “Somewhere along the way, people forgot about the cause for which it was started. The message was lost and everyone was just participating in it because it had become a fad. I feel that if you believe in the cause, just go ahead and donate for it. Why does one have to waste so much water to attract attention towards another cause? So to gently remind people of the real message, I did what I did.”
Success has always been at her feet but now this girl is unstoppable.Shesays, her focus is to live up every moment and make people who matter to her, feel loved. But she feels lack of time is an obstacle, often. “I feel time is the biggest luxury in life. The profession that I am in, no matter how much time I have, it just gets all gobbled up in work. There is so much to do and so little time. And whatever time I have for myself, it seems less,” says the stunner with a warm smile.
