Light- Up Your Space

Pushing the envelope of luxury living, architectural lighting is doing wonders by making living spaces more lively and beautiful while creating the aura that lifts up one's soul!

We all have witnessed the magic of lighting. If it wasn’t for the colours popping out of the Eiffel tower at night, there is a chance that it would just be a metal structure appreciated for its mammoth size. Similarly, monuments around the world got a new life when the artificial lighting got popularized in the late 1920s. In this day and age, the significance of architectural lighting has only increased. Not just the monumental structures but outlets for commercial purposes, residential places and industries, all have been transformed by such lights.

It is important to understand that the purpose of highlighting a space with architectural lights is not merely adding an accessory (an oddly humongous chandelier is big no in a small living room) rather creating a cohesive spatial experience. And that experience should not come at a cost of environmental damage.

An interior designer, Shubham Verma, who specializes in transforming home décor with the help of different lighting techniques, believes that even furniture requires the backing of cove lights to bring out its real beauty. “Modern day furniture comes embellished with intricate patterns and facades and to really make that piece of furniture add to a space’s aesthetic, back lights play an important role," he says.

According to the Global Industry Report published in April 2020, the architectural lighting market size was valued at 7.8 million dollars in 2019 and is projected to grow at fast rate in the upcoming years. Even though the greater share of the market value comes from the commercial buildings such as airports, IT parks, resorts and spas, the residential spaces have also heavily incorporated the light works in the last few years. In fact, the usage is expected to grow at a rate of 12.9% in the next few years. Clearly, the rising standards of luxury homes and keen interest of people in creating personalised living spaces are some of the contributing factors.

It's important to know that there is a huge difference between the way lighting works at a commercial space and a room where we live. While extra spot lights and high intensity lighting solutions work wonders in highlighting products at a store, the same adds tension to a place where people like to relax. Adding further, Shubham suggests that one should use dim LED lights while thinking about home décor. “The way light works, it should be always fit well with the mood of people. When at home, spaces like bedroom and living should always have warm white or even yellow lights to make the place feel cozy,” he adds.

As much as lights help in enhancing the aesthetics of a room, they also add functionality. Another Delhi-based interior designer, Radhika Bansal says, “For instance if your television unit is small then you should avoid installing any lights in it as they draw focus towards them and it becomes difficult to keep your eyes on television.”

Considering the on-going trend, the declining prices of LED lights are only going to encourage customers and designers to incorporate such lightings around making their places all the more beautiful. So, ready to light up your life!
