Leaves are Falling, Autumn is Calling

We know it’s all fall breeze and autumn leaves in October. With the changes in the weather, our garden needs a little revamping too. From planting the best fall flowers, and spring bulbs to harvesting the last veggies, there is so much to do in October. Not to forget, you must have planted pumpkins in May & June, and now they are ready to harvest. It’s time to add those in your sweet and savory dishes for Halloween. Plus, you can use pumpkins for fun decorations too. With so many ideas in mind, it’s time to put some to practice. Here we have some of the garden tips for this month, roll up your sleeves and dig up kids!

Love Is Like A Rose

Did you know October is traditionally a rose month? During this time roses are in full bud now and ready to burst into color. If you still haven't planted roses, well consider October the right time as the weather encourages plants to root quickly and the soil is generally easier to work with. Pick any from the dazzling range of roses available. As for their care, water them twice a week, and fertilize them monthly with rose food to promote healthy foliage and more flowers.

Bulbs To The Landscape

Wondering what to plant in October and November? Well, Spring-flowering bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, crocus, peonies, lilies, and more will be a great pick. You can either plant them in pots or directly on the ground. Toss your bulbs over the garden bed and plant them where they land for a casual, natural look. One tip to keep in mind is not to forget to add some compost and bulb fertilizer to your soil. Water deeply and regularly and voila you’ll have your desired October garden.

Divide or Prune Perennials

You might not know but most flowers benefit from a good haircut. You can either divide or cut plants such as bearded iris, peony, lily, hosta, coneflower, black-eyed Susan, and catmint. You should only cut back to a height of 3 to 5 inches. Some plants tend to over grow and die out from the center. Do a little extra research if you are dividing, but we suggest you prune. To remove the dead and dying foliage, use a pair of sharp pruning shears; avoid snapping it off with your bare hands as you risk damaging the roots. It's also great as once the foliage is removed it’s easier to work around the plants.
