Clocked In Cartagena Magic

Cartagena, Colombia, is a soul-stirring city, where cobblestone streets whisper past secrets and trade winds bring scents of adventure. It is a city in which every street corner radiates colour, rhythm, and warmth.

Clocked In Cartagena Magic

Cartagena, a tiny colonial town, is quickly becoming one of the region's most visited tourist spots in both South America and the Caribbean. Unlike the modern megacity of Medellín, Cartagena presents a historical, time-worn environment that showcases its colonial heritage. While Medellín displays modern urban development, Cartagena retains much of its old-world charm. Yet, attempts are currently being made to develop and enlarge the city considerably in the years to come to make Cartagena a major competitor with other leading tourist destinations in the Caribbean.

This change involves the construction of new infrastructure, high-rise developments, and upscale accommodations. The strategic location of the city along the coast and its cultural heritage make it an appealing investment for tourism expansion. With development, Cartagena aims to strike a balance between retaining its colonial essence and adopting modernity to appeal to more international tourists.

Cartagena has numerous stunning churches and cathedrals. In a recent papal visit, some of the major religious landmarks were repaired and extensively cleaned in anticipation of His Holiness.

Some of the famous churches are Catedral de Santa Catalina, Despacho Parroquial, and Parroquia San Pedro Claver. Santuario de San Pedro Claver and Catedral Santa Catalina (also known as the Cathedral of Cartagena) are both within the walled city, and the Iglesia de la Trinidad is only a few blocks outside the walled city. The churches are a pleasant refuge from the heat and commotion of the city, and a visit is a necessity for visiting Cartagena.

Santuario de San Pedro Claver is an impressive 16th-century church building in Spanish colonial style. It is part of a greater complex that also houses the Cloister of San Pedro Claver and an archaeological museum. Building began between 1580 and 1654.

Catedral Santa Catalina de Alejandría is another architectural beauty, originally commissioned by French architect Simón González. The construction was initiated in 1577 but was halted in 1586 when the under-construction building was invaded by Sir Francis Drake.

The Clock Tower Gate

Found in Plaza De La Paz, the legendary Clock Tower Gate (La Torre del Reloj) was the main entrance through Cartagena's city wall.

The building has an interesting history. When initially constructed, there was not enough money to appoint a qualified clockmaster, and as a consequence, all four of the clock faces showed different times. For this reason, it became colloquially known as "clock of four faces," although this was later fixed. The tower initially had a single central arch. A chapel and an armament room were located within the side arches, which were substituted by two further arches in the 18th century. The tower also experienced damage as a result of an invasion.

Remnants of the ancient pendulums still remain within the central arch today. The present clocks were added in 1888, and the building itself took on a new name: simply the Clock Tower. The exterior features a central arch and a Tuscan portico, but the interior has a simple and austere look.

Beaches

The Rosario Islands archipelago includes private and public islands that are part of the Rosario National Park. The islands are a favorite for beach day excursions, and overnight stays are a preferred option for those with time to spare.

There are several Cartagena Island tours to choose from, each with a variety of activities such as snorkeling, relaxation, boat parties, and sunset cruises. The majority of tours start from the main marina, Muelle de la Bodeguita.

Nightlife

Getsemani is famous for its vibrant and dynamic nightlife. There are many evening entertainment choices offered by the area. Bars like Demente are well-liked due to their lively ambiance, great mojitos, tasty tapas, and ample outdoor space. Salsa clubs like Cafe Havana and Bazurto Social Club have music and dancing, though they usually require a cover fee and start late, after 10 PM. Salsa lessons during the day also exist.

Holy Trinity Square is a meeting place with spontaneous activity, such as dance lessons and breakdancing shows. There are lots of young people spending their nights there, having drinks and a social atmosphere.
