An Icon Caught Between Eras

LOEWE’s Amazona 180 offers a softer, more relaxed take on one of the House’s most recognisable handbag signatures. Beautifully crafted and understated in its approach, the design demonstrates LOEWE’s ability to make heritage feel contemporary.

An Icon Caught Between Eras

The LOEWE Amazona 180 makes a polished first impression, thanks to its supple leather, understated branding and recognisable toron handle. Its Amazona heritage gives it a sense of luxury.

Unfortunately, that familiarity becomes one of the bag’s biggest weaknesses. The Amazona 180 feels less like a meaningful reinvention and more like a softened version of an existing formula. Instead of pushing the iconic silhouette somewhere unexpected, LOEWE appears to have adapted it to the current obsession with relaxed, slouchy handbags.

That decision makes the design feel predictable. Soft, unstructured handbags are already everywhere, making the Amazona 180’s relaxed proportions hardly revolutionary. What may initially appear modern quickly begins to look like another attempt to follow an established trend.

Beautifully crafted and unmistakably LOEWE, the Amazona 180 modernises a classic—but its softer update offers less innovation than expected.

The lack of structure is also a practical concern. Softness can affect organisation and shape retention. For an everyday luxury bag, the Amazona 180 does not seem to offer enough structure to make carrying belongings particularly efficient or secure. Its relaxed construction may photograph well, but that does not guarantee functionality.

The toron handle is perhaps the most recognisable element, yet its prominence reveals another limitation. The handle does much of the work in making the bag identifiable, while the rest of the silhouette feels comparatively restrained. A stronger redesign would have introduced several distinctive elements instead of relying so heavily on one familiar detail.

The detachable strap does little to resolve this issue. Although it provides multiple carrying options, the versatility feels more functional than purposeful. The hand-held version feels refined, while the crossbody option moves into crowded casual territory. The bag feels caught between identities.

Its greatest weakness, however, is its dependence on the Amazona name. Heritage can be a powerful asset, but it should support innovation rather than replace it. The 180 benefits enormously from the recognition of its predecessor, yet there is surprisingly little about the redesign that feels genuinely new.

The current preference for softness may also work against its longevity. Structured handbags often have a timeless quality, while slouchier silhouettes can become tied to fashion cycles. If the appetite for relaxed bags fades, the Amazona 180 could quickly appear tied to a passing moment.

Ultimately, the Amazona 180 is polished but overly cautious. It carries the prestige of a celebrated name without delivering enough creative distinction of its own. For LOEWE, the result feels less like a bold new chapter and more like a missed opportunity.
