An Architectural Marvel

From luxury cars to watches, clothes, and cosmetics, Baku offers a myriad of options for anyone in search of some retail therapy. And, L’Officiel could take a stroll along Nizami Street and around Baku’s stylish malls to explore upmarket boutiques and indulge in the latest fashion trends. But for a real Azerbaijani experience, we would suggest you to lose yourself in the colour and bustle of the city to pick out your favourite antiques or traditional hand-woven exquisites. But first off, look ahead for the travel guide!

Nizami Street

Nizami Street

We remember strolling down that bustling pedestrian avenue in Baku, the heart of Azerbaijan’s capital. From freshly brewed coffee aroma, to the sweet scent of pastries, and the faint hint of spices from nearby restaurants. Walking along the old town, an imposing building that stood out like a gem among the shops and eateries is a fusion of architectural styles – Baroque, Rococo, and Moorish – a testament to eclectic tastes of creators. And what a tale lies behind that very building! The Mailov brothers, embarked on a mission fuelled by love. One of them had fallen head over heels for a touring soprano singer. As touring soprano singer refused to return to Baku because it didn’t have a proper opera theatre. So, armed with determination and a vision, the brothers collaborated with the architect Nikolai Babayev. They worked tirelessly, day and night, fuelled by passion and a desire to create something extraordinary. In just ten months – an astonishing feat – they brought the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre to life. The inaugural performance was nothing short of magical. Where chandeliers glittered, velvet curtains whispered, and stage came alive with Azerbaijani masterpieces. That’s how, the opera ‘Leyli and Majnun’ marked the inception of a novel genre in the world’s musical culture. It skilfully blended oriental and European musical forms, creating a harmonious dialogue between the musical traditions of the East and the West. As the first opera to fuse mugham (an Azerbaijani traditional musical style) with European classical music, ‘Leyli and Majnun’ pioneered a fresh opera genre.
