Thailand is famous for its food, culture and what we have got on our Digital Cover for L’Officiel June edition – Anna Warinthorn. “I would go to America. I want to go there with the current US president. I think he has interesting points of view.” She says while talking about one place she wants to go to. And for the problems that the LGBTQ+ community faces as a whole she says, “The laws still approve me as a man even though I am a transgender.”

Interview

Since I was a child, I like to dress, look at myself in the mirror, put on make up, and wear colorful dresses.

First of all, a very Happy Pride Month. How far do you think the LGBTQ+ community has come?

I think the LGBT group in Thailand has been improving so far. We are expected to live our lives freely in Thailand. But we fail in terms of laws because we still don’t have the same-sex marriage act. There are some politicians who believe that same-sex marriage will create lots of advantages for heterosexuals. This is the ideology of the majority of people in Thailand, so we are not able to get what we should get according to our basic rights. We can say that we are successful in terms of freedom of expression but the laws are the social standard. If we still don’t have a suitable law for the LGBT groups, the recognition of living freely in Thailand will mean nothing. That is because the LGBT group is still nobody.

When did you know that you wanted to build your career on beauty? What were the difficulties you faced in the initial stage of your career?

Since I was a child, I like to dress, look at myself in the mirror, put on make-up, and wear colourful dresses. Whenever I have a chance to make myself more beautiful, I never wait. It is an easy decision for me because I believe that people can be good-looking every day if we are able to choose the best thing for ourselves. I fully entered the beauty industry by being a surgery agent. I have managed surgeries for over 5000 people and 95% of them are successful. It led me to where I am today. I am more accepted after I have had over 30 surgeries on my face and body. I have transitioned from a male to a female body. Everyone recognizes me as a successful person in the beauty industry.

Being a transgender yourself, what are the problems that you go through every day?

The only problem in my life is the understanding of people in my society. This understanding comes from the laws. The laws still approve of me as a man even though I am a transgender. This causes me lots of trouble when I go to the hospital. They always ask me if I am a man or a woman, or if I had a sex change surgery yet. I think this kind of question should not be asked by strangers. I think Thailand is a nice and beautiful country but I feel sorry because we can’t get the laws that approve the genders we want to be. I’ll still have to use the male title even though I am a woman now. Our country always judges people by their titles and I think it is not fair.

How would you define your beauty style to be? Choose between skincare and makeup.

I think I am a skincare person. Skincare is beauty. Though I don’t apply anything to my face or body, I always have my beauty with me. Wearing make-up on our faces can make us beautiful for a while. But the confidence in our faces and every part of our bodies makes us beautiful the way we are. It is absolutely different. You are the one and only. You are the only one in the world if you have confidence in your own skin.

What are some of your favourite fashion brands which have marked a permanent spot in your wardrobe?

For me, my favourite brand of all time is Hermès. Its style is luxuriously simple and practical in everyday use. The true fashion is its simplicity and the natural colours. I think Hermes meets my need. Though the price is quite high, I don’t mind it. If I love the brand and its style, the price is not the subject to talk about.

How fascinating do you find astrology and tarot card reading to be?

I do believe in destiny. I also believe that destiny comes to life from the human subconscious. If we believe that our lives will be successful, we will do everything to make it happen. It is the destiny that we choose for ourselves, not from heaven. I believe in destiny from my subconscious and I think it is the best drive for my life.

Suppose you were given a chance for a weekend getaway. Where would it be and with whom?

If I had a chance to go abroad, I would go to America. I want to go there with the current US president. I think he has interesting points of view. I want to have a chance to exchange my opinions with one of the world leaders like him because it is a rare opportunity. If I do that, I can apply his opinions to my life in many ways. Money might be valuable but I think attitude is much more than that. It can lead us to the finish line of our lives. So if I had a chance, I would talk to the US president.

We see your fitness peaking through your curves. What’s your secret to being fit?

I used to be an overweight person and I had surgery to lose weight. Now I take care of myself by putting my focus on diets. Health and shape are a little bit more important when we are getting older and older. I now prefer eating nutritious food that benefits my health to other kinds of junk food.

What message would you like to give people who still see the LGBTQ community differently?

I am not able to change anybody’s mind. If I had a chance to talk to someone whose thought is different from mine, there would be only one thing I want to tell him or her. I am a human with flesh and blood. Don’t pity me. Just see me as a human-like you see yourself in the mirror every day.
