With the sweet sensory fragrance of the fresh spring season adrift in the air and vivid floral colours brightening up the day, we have got the perfect gardening escape for you. While one can have various kinds of gardening ideas for open and big spaces, it’s usually the owners of small spaces who find it a struggle to get a perfect garden in and around their homes.

But worry not, as Terrarium mini-gardens is just the solution you were looking for. For the unversed, Terrariums are like miniature gardens made of an enclosed glass compartment which can be a bowl or a jar. They are small ecosystems created when the warmth from the sunlight causes moisture to evaporate from plants and soil. The condensed droplets of water then get accumulated on the surface of the container. This keeps the moisture intact in the glass compartment, helping the growth of the plant. Along with this, the soil also provides additional nutrients, necessary for survival. Finally, when the plant dies, it decomposes in soil which further enhances the soil quality. So just like aquatic animals need the aquariums to survive, certain small plants need an ecosystem supported by Terrariums. The best part of the Terrariums is that they are low maintenance, portable and act as a natural air purifier. Besides that, they adorn your home aesthetically by occupying the vacant spaces. Here’s how you can make your terrarium mini garden and what all you need.

Requirements

To make a Terrarium garden you require a clean glass container with an opening. Jars, aquariums, goldfish bowl, broad vases, shallow fish dishes work well for this garden. You will also need marbles (big or small, depending on the size of the container), activated charcoal to filter water and prevent fungi, sterilized rich soil, and a plant of your choice. Some of the plants that work best for Terrariums are Ferns, Peperomia, Tillandsia, Dwarf plants, Venus Fly Traps, Pitcher plants, Sundew, to name a few.

Method

First fill the bottom of your Terrarium bowl/ jar with pebbles and small rocks, then add a layer of soil that covers more than half of the container; make sure it has sufficient space for the roots of the plants to go seep in. Now take the plant and place its root inside the soil then add a second layer of soil. Firmly press the soil bed and ensure the plant is packed in nicely. You can select from a large variety of plant options, and voila. You have your personal garden at home!
