Walk With Pride

Walk With Pride

The Rainbow is one of nature’s greatest optical phenomenons and it is beautiful how it immediately lights up one’s face. That smile is an involuntary action, you see a rainbow and you immediately jump out of happiness, clearly evoking the innocence of a child inside you. Colours bring happiness. Variation celebrates diversity.

Welcome yourself to the month of honouring your differences and celebrating yourself, as you set yourself free from society’s prejudices. The glorified 21st century, is always on the lookout for edgy and disruptive celebrations- an antithesis of societal definition of regular and monotonous norms. Transport yourself back to the 18th -19th century, when individuality and empowerment were often curbed down, LGBTQ history is no different.

As we step back in history, on June 28, 1969, the Greenwich Village Bar called the Stonewall Inn in its happy hours, as the police raided the bar house. This raid ignited violent conflicts and protests: Police v/s the Pride community. It lasted for days that accelerated the struggle for gay rights. This led to the formation of the first queer activist organisation which led to changes in the society. Salute to the magic and spirit of Stonewall that allowed us to breathe in the world that is learning to accept diversities and celebrate differences.

Fashion is more than just glam and glitz. It is the key that is continuously on the journey to uplift, celebrate and empower individuals. It is a means of visual communication. After all, fashion is the escape drink when words slurp out.

Fashion and the Pride community are inseparable. The storm created by models and designers who are androgynous, bisexual, gay, lesbians; drag queens need no words of appreciation. Desmond Napoles is an 11-year old drag kid who goes by the stage name ‘Desmond is Amazing’.

Isn't it beautiful witnessing a little kid change the conceptions of the world for good?  ‘RuPauls Drag Race’ now in its 11th season, is giving the recognition that these queens deserve. Brands are showcasing their support by creating capsule collections full of rainbow-themed apparel and accessories, to spread awareness about LGBTQ rights and supporting the community including H&M, Adidas.

Pride is not just about feathers, colours or walking the streets only to raise awareness.  This manifestation of Pride, clearly, is a call to support the entire human race and love all of its contrasts before ‘love conquers all’ becomes a myth. Don’t worry, there will be the beautiful rainbow and sunshine to support you and needless to say, fashion will have your back!
