Kull the Carbon

It took a designer from a cleaner part of the world to figure out how to get rid of the smog and turn it into a sparkling affair.

It stands tall, gently moving its wing-like extensions, sucking the grey smog. It is not a monster resurrected from our favourite Marvel comics, but a saviour on a mission to save us from the Frankenstein called pollution that humans have created. It is the Smog Free Tower, designed and made by Daan Roosegaarde. What Daan has done, might go down in history as a genius idea that ultimately saved earthlings.

Even as everyone else complained and cribbed about the increasing smog situation in various parts of the world, especially India and China, this passionate Dutch designer and his team of experts wrapped their brains around the problem. Their solution was simple. Design a vacuum cleaner like machine that can suck all the carbon dioxide and monoxide. But, the execution was tricky.

Daan, in his TEDx Talk, said that they used positive ionisation technology (now patented) to make this Smog Free Tower. In simple words, it is somewhat like a comb’s static electricity attracting the hair. The 23-feet tall air purifier has been tested in Beijing, one of the most polluted, smog-ridden cities of the world. The result: 55 per cent cleaner air. Not only does this system cleans the air (at 30.000 m3 per hour) working effectively even in large, open spaces, but it also uses minimal electricity. Just 1,170 watts. That’s like boiling a kettle of water.

Now, the news might make you optimistic about our future, but the next piece of information is what got us all excited. Daan has found a way to turn all that grim into diamonds. Yes, you read that right. “So, how do we get diamonds?” he asked in his Talk, and answered after a dramatic pause, “by compressing carbon at high pressure, right?” This is exactly what his team does, and voila, you have lab-made, dazzling diamonds.

So, you can not only get your own Smog Free ring made out of pollution, but also contribute towards giving 1,000 m3 of clean air to your city. That’s how much of smog particles are needed to create the diamond.

Daan has a new addition to his Smog Free Project... a Smog Free bicycle that inhales polluted air, cleans it, and releases clean air. Every year, we reel under thick smog in India. What do we do? Make #smogkills trend. There is a glimmer of hope here. Can we get our own tower please?
