Shyamal & Bhumika

Shyamal and Bhumika

They never get annoyed from each other, as the couple reveals to us. And that is what led them to grow as a brand. They started the label way back in the year 2003 and since then, they have been providing the buyers with a modern outlook on very Indian designs. Intricate detailing, clean embroidery, and usage of age old craft techniques is what Shyamal and Bhumika stands for and we delved into a conversation with them to discover more. Excerpts from the interview:

As we begin the New Year, tell us some of the key projects that you are working on for the year? What are we looking forward to?
With the beginning of the year, we launched the Bridal Collection for 2019.  Customisation with hand embroidery is the key this year. For our upcoming collections, we aim to revive some old crafts with our contemporary aesthetic and give a new dimension to bridal wear. Menswear will be a big focus for Shyamal & Bhumika this year.

Every person has different sets of ideas to offer. How do you both maintain your synergy?
We have been working together since the year 1999 and it’s been about 20 years that we’ve been a team. We have micro segregated our roles and both of us have some strengths and weaknesses which we manage to play in our favour. At Shyamal & Bhumika, Bhumika  plays the role of a fashion designer and I am the Creative Director.

When working on a project or ideas, how do you both come on a conclusion? Are the decisions amicable or do they end up in a debate?
We definitely have debates but since we started working at a very young age, we understand each other. When one of us feels strongly for something the other knows the logic behind it leaving less room for debates. We tend to agree on a lot of things as we have set responsibilities often when we go into a particular project. We respect each other’s involvement and give each other enough time to listen to our own ideas.

Tell us about some skills that you have learnt from each other.
Bhumika: Learning more about the business is what Shyamal has taught me.
Shyamal: The vivid imagination and creative ideas of Bhumika have taught me to widen my horizon and think out of the box for our business.

What is the most annoying thing about each other?
We hardly get time to get annoyed with each other.

How did the thought of coming together and forming a brand come about?
Bhumika and I have been designing since 2000, right out of fashion college. We established Shyamal & Bhumika in 2003 and have grown as couturiers in this glorious industry. Taking inspirations from all around us, from the architectural grandeurs of our ancestral homes, our personal travels and tales we’ve grown up listening to, we have worked with different dyeing, embroidery and even hand-stitching techniques. For us it is the journey to success that has mattered more than the destination.
