This tiny accessory has become ubiquitous over the last few years with international celebrities such as Jon Hamm, Justin Timberlake, Hugh Jackman, donning pocket squares for their red carpet appearances.
The pocket square has evolved over the years, going from serving a more utilitarian purpose into a fun and experimental one. At the same time, this accessory has remained synonymous with old-world charm and one can easily choose that’s more traditional. But how to choose is not a stead fast rule. Selecting the right one can be a task though.
As this trend gets bigger, everybody is getting into the pocket-square business, from suit makers to fashion brands. Designer Raghavendra Rathore feels that style does not depend only on clothes. Important details such as accessories are critical in rounding off and refining the complete look. Very few bespoke houses offer customised pocket squares, that allow the customer’s personalities to be truly represented. “The clients with us get an opportunity to custom-make the design of their pocket squares as a reflection of true individual style. They can choose from an eclectic array of handcrafted pocket squares, made of the finest materials and highly skilled workmanship creating these gems. While keeping it in the classic space, one can add so much fun to it because of the way it can be made in different styles, colours, and prints,” adds Raghavendra.
Pocket squares are always a great way to add some colour and panache to your overall looks. Another interesting way of wearing a pocket square, which has gained momentum, is wearing two of them in different textures and colours to make a unique statement. It can uplift even the simplest of suits.
“I believe that men tend to play safe when it comes to dressing up. Their choice of colours oscillates between blacks, whites and blues. Pocket squares can change the game altogether—these petite accents can completely change the look, make it more bright, fun while making a statement. We love experimenting with our pocket squares by giving them an edgy twist using chunky studs, embellishments and sharp stellar detailing,” says designer Gaurav Gupta.
The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon said on his show that, if you’re not wearing a pocket square, you’re not doing justice to your suit. He was tired of seeing staffers stuff their iPhones into their blazer pockets. So, he initiated a mini drive to make a pocket dial case for iPhone users. A pocket square was sewed to a back cover, also supporting two interiors pockets for purposes like business cards or wallets.
Isn’t it an art piece completely changing the usage of a back case and making it an adornment piece? It’s time to bring this seemingly simple accessory out of the closet and let your fashion sense run riot with it.
