Humble, down to earth, and most importantly, human; are some of the words that best describe designer Bibhu Mohapatra. His designs are relaxed yet structured, feminine yet edgy. Bibhu moved to America in 1996, and after graduating from Utah State University with a Masters Degree in Economics, he moved to New York City in 1999, where he got enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

The Big Apple gave the designer wings to fly, yet he held his ground, with a confident demeanor and big dreams in his eyes. Following the inception of his eponymous label, came much deserved fame. To date, celebrities such as Hilary Swank, Gwyneth Paltrow, Glenn Close, Jennifer Lopez, Ciara, Rita Ora and Lupita Nyong’o, have all worn Bibhu’s designs; and recently he has had the honour of dressing the former First Lady of USA, Michelle Obama upon her arrival in India in 2015. He surely is the designer behind the definitive style that Michele glorifies.

Going over the success of his most recent and successful runway show, Bibhu tells us what all went into creating such fine silhouettes for his Spring 2020 collection, showcased at New York Fashion Week 2019. It was Bibhu’s most confident and relaxed collection. We are happy to see that even decades later, he has celebrated a similar undaunted womanhood in his designs, that has been present since its inception. Here are some edited excerpts of the interview.
