Floral Dreams

Designer Magda Butrym’s designs are for a global audience.

Designer Magda Butrym’s designs may be intrinsically Polish at heart, but they are for a global audience.

Since the inception of her label Varsovie in 2014, designer Magda Butrym has been infusing romanticism, sophistication and modernity in her creations. Besides her ready-to-wear collection, she has developed her range of accessories, jewellery and shoes that are inspired by her Polish heritage. Internationally acclaimed and knighted by her peers, she dresses some of the most influential style icons from across the world like Gigi Hadid, Kim Kardashian, Alicia Vikander, Anja Rubik, Leandra Medine. Excerpts from an interview with Magda:

Did you always want to be a fashion creator?

I started fabricating my own clothes at a very early age. But, in that period living in Poland, fashion was not a career choice.

What course did you take?

I worked for a Polish creator. It allowed me to open my eyes and to learn a lot about the relationship between fashion and women.

How would you describe the essence of your brand?

I would say that a certain romantic feminity predominates. There is so much androgyny and unisex in fashion these days. I have a feeling that the details and romantic references are not seen well. So, what drives me is to make those cool again.

Do you have a favourite material?

My absolute favourite is actually a classic, satin silk in vanilla colour.

What is the USP of your brand?

I have never looked for being a revolutionary. But, I remember when I started, the stylists and editors were shocked to see all ruffles and floral prints.

How many collections do you present in a year?

I propose two collections each year, which includes ready-to-wear. Shoes and jewellery. But, I wish to add some capsule collections.

Tell us about the important pieces from your current line?

Tailor lights, second skin suede coats, the capes that I revisited in different textures and colours and obviously the blouses and the printed dresses. And then there is a lot of hand work. I have given a lot of importance to the art.

Where are the clothes made? Tell us about your team? What are your upcoming projects?

Everything is exclusively crafted in Poland, only the shoes are done in Italy. We are a team of 10 people. I have a studio in Varsovie where 10 more people are working. I am elaborating the range of accessories.

Share a memory with us that you are very fond of.

When we launched our online ready-to-wear collection, it was sold out in a week. It was not so much about the numbers but the feeling was unbelievable. The feeling that so many women want to wear Magda Butrym.

What was the most touching compliment that you have received so far?

Recently, somebody told me that they know the brand without even having to look at the label. But, I have to confess that watching my creations worn by women like Alexa Chung or Emily Ratajkowski is a great honour.

Tell us something about summer dresses and how you approach it?

I always find it difficult to dress in summers when we are in town. We do not want to show the body too much, but we need to be light and moving. This is the starting point for my summer collections.

Who are your inspirations?

I was influenced by Madame Grès. I explore the idea of a strong silhouette, which is light and feminine at the same time. I was equally inspired by the 1920s. I like the nonchalant character of the women of that period.
