The mother is the creator of the world renowned label, while the son is the business head of the label which has touched millions of hearts across the globe. And what happens when the mother and son duo get in together? Of course, all is peaceful. The House of Anita Dongre has till date, dressed Kate Middleton, former first lady of the U.S., Hillary Clinton, and Canada’s first lady, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau and well, 2019 looks very bright for the label. How? Here are excerpts from the interview:
As we begin the New Year, tell us some of the key projects that you are working on for the year? What are we looking forward to?
Anita: We are continuously working on creating new designs and showcase four-six seasonal collections in a year which keep us plenty busy. However, this year, I intend on optimising our sustainability project in villages under the Anita Dongre Foundation. This year, we intend to expand our reach to four more villages. Under our sustainability initiative, that runs on the belief of empowering women, we train unskilled labour and further provide them with sustained, gainful employment opportunities close to their homes.
Yash: Since the launch of our store in New York early last year and the love that we received, we plan on expanding the business in the U.S., while entering new markets and opening more stores internationally as well as in India.
Every person has different sets of ideas to offer. How do you both maintain your synergy?
Luckily for us, even though we come from different generations, we think alike and have similar goals. Communication is key and through conversation, we usually come to a decision collectively.
When working on a project or ideas, how do you both come to a conclusion? Are the decisions amicable or do they end up in a debate?
While we always share ideas and varied viewpoints with each other, I believe it is our division of work and aligned vision that helps the decision making process easier. While my work day involves product and design, Yash heads marketing and focuses on business development.
Tell us about some skills that you have learned from each other.
Anita: By nature, I’m fairly impatient and anxious. Yash, on the other hand, is remarkably level headed and with time, I am learning to be calmer from him.
Yash: My mother is my idol. Growing up, I have always looked up to her and her work. Her passion, hard work, discipline, and her drive to keep doing more is something I truly admire. Her deep-rooted morals and values have influenced and guided not just me but it has translated into the company’s values as well.
What is the most annoying thing about each other?
Anita: I am trying to teach Yash the value of time. When I say 8:30 for a meeting, I am there at 8:30 whereas Yash is still on his way to getting there.
Yash: She’s a creative soul and her mind is always bursting with so many ideas, constantly running in top gear. In times like these, I have to remind her to take a pause to align her thoughts, focus on what is on the plate and to not take on too much at one time.
