Born from Aerin Lauder’s personal liking for perfumes and a passion for beauty that runs in her family, came her latest line of fragrances. Offering a tribute to fragrant ingredients found in south of France, the scent can make you recall the light that filters through the treetops and beauty of the Côte d’Azur. While in Paris, Aerin talks about the latest collection of fragrances. Execrpts:
Where did the inspiration for Éclat de vert come from?
This very green and very cool fragrance was inspired by my memories of the south of France, where my grandmother often visited.
Originally, green fragrances make for a wonderful family, but are much less popular than the flowers.
My grandmother launched Aliage in 1972, which was a green scent. Beautiful but not commercial, it was a special, unique fragrance. Because of that line, I have relaised that our collection does not have to be commercial.
What are the characteristics of this perfume composed by Honorine Blanc at Firmenich?
For the green facet, two ingredients typical of this note, a combination of mastic and galbanum have been used. It’s the starting point of the perfume. There are scents of fresh magnolia and lilies.
Today, the trend in perfumery has become gourmand.
Yes, currently, fruity smells are most popular. Hibiscus Palm with coconut is our interpretation of this trend. But, the trend will change.
Your favourite perfumes?
Rose de Grasse and Mediterranean Honeysuckle. And, apart from the House, Diorissimo, this is the first perfume that I discovered when I was a teenager.
And perfumes that you do not like?
I do not like leather odors or smoked smells. I do not really appreciate masculine smells. I do not think I could deal with a masculine scent, may be this is why Aerin, as a brand, is very feminine.
How do you divide your work between Estée Lauder and Aerin?
Today, Aerin occupies 80 per cent of my time, but I remain very concerned about Estée Lauder too, especially its campaigns and new launches. We are present in 53 countries.
You have chosen to give your name for the brand.
We had thought of different names but setttled with Aerin, because it is like a part of me. I give advice, share my essentials for beauty.
What are your favourite products?
I like perfumes and creams. The perfume can change a mood, it’s something very interesting.
What are your favourite flowers?
I love lily of the valley and garden. I have a garden with lots of flowers, roses, dahlias, peonies, but not vegetables!
Your brand is not limited today to beauty alone.
We started by creating products for beauty and then the style has spread to fabrics, bags and a whole universe around the House.
What do you consider most important in your life?
My children! When I developed Private Collection with tuberose, a teacher called to tell me that one of my sons smelled very good every day. It was my Tuberose Gardenia. Today, it still makes us laugh.
You are very active on Instagram.
I like Instagram. It relaxes me. My youngest son thinks I post too much, especially too many flowers. I like to discover things. I’m interested in the power of the digital age, even if it is dangerous. My Instagram is more for professional use.
